CHICAGO, IL — A teenage girl was reportedly gang raped by at least 5 men and none of the 40 people who watched the horror unfold on Facebook Live reported the attack, say police.
Police say they only learned of the attack when the girl’s mother approached police Superintendent Eddie Johnson late Monday afternoon and reported that her daughter had went missing. Investigators say the distraught mother told him her daughter had been missing since Sunday and showed him screen grab photos of what she believed was her daughter’s sexual assault.
Chicago police spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi told Associated Press on Tuesday that the department opened an immediate investigation into the girl’s disappearance and asked Facebook to take down the video.
The incident marks the second time in less than 6 months that an attack has been live streamed on Facebook. In January, four people were arrested after cellphone footage live streamed on the social media platform showed perpetrators beating an autistic man who said he was a Trump supporter.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Guglielmi said detectives had found the girl and reunited her with her family. The attack is still under investigation.
Because of the girl’s age, her identity is being concealed. The names of the alleged rapists have not yet been disclosed.
