POLICE: MEXICAN RESPONSIBLE FOR DEADLY DUI CRASH HAD UNLAWFULLY ENTERED US AT LEAST 7 TIMES

OMAHA, NEBRASKA — An illegal immigrant who police say was responsible for a fiery DUI crash in Nebraska last week had unlawfully entered the United States on at least seven occasions, say police.

Court documents filed by Douglas County prosecutors on Tuesday reveal that Nemias Garcia-Velasco, 32, was deported to Mexico in 2009, again in 2011 and left the U.S. to return to his home country on at least five other occasions before deportations could be finalized. Garcia-Velasco was also convicted of falsely claiming U.S. citizenship in 2005.

Douglas County Prosecutor Ryan Lindberg on Tuesday asked the judge presiding over the case to set a high bail for Garcia-Velasco because he feared the man might again flee, escaping justice.

“If this is someone who bonds out, I don’t think we’ll see Mr. Garcia-Velasco again,” Lindberg told the judge.

As reported by The Omaha World-Herald (http://www.omaha.com/news/crime/police-say-driver-was-drunk-when-he-crashed-van-at/article_398b1b60-646d-11e7-93c5-c3c3868c64dc.html), police allege Garcia-Velasco was driving while drunk on July 5 when he lost control of his 2001 Dodge Ram van. Police estimate Garcia-Velasco was speeding, going over 100 mph when his van hit a bridge abutment before it rolled and caught fire at around 1 p.m.. Silvano Torres, 58, a passenger in the van, died as a result of his injuries. Another passenger, Jesus I. Gonzalez, 16, was hospitalized and released later the same day.

Garcia-Velasco reportedly told officers that he had consumed 12 beers in the hours leading up to the crash.

Garcia-Velasco’s arrest is just the latest in a series of high profile tragedies that president Donald Trump has cited in his argument for the need to build a wall between the United States in Mexico in an effort to cut down on crime and injury to American citizens.

According to recently published reports (https://rebekahworsham.org/2017/07/11/gettin-outta-dodge-more-illegals-self-deporting-amid-fear-of-trump-administration-says-report/), Trump’s tough talk as led to a trend in which immigrants who are in the U.S. illegally are voluntarily “self deporting” themselves back to their home countries rather than face the sanctions vowed by Attorney General Jeff Sessions who has promised tough penalties for those caught in the U.S. without authorization.
